2008 Tax Rebate Stimulus Package

Jim at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity has done a great job summarizing the tax rebate that looks likely to pass Congress and get signed by the President.

Looks like I’m headed for an $1,800 rebate, of which a grand total of $0 will make it back into the economy short-term. 100% is earmarked for savings towards the next car we need in 2-3 years.

Overdraft Fees

Fact: Overdraft fees are getting higher and higher every year.

Fact: Banks maximize the fees they get by choosing the most beneficial method, for them, of applying checks to your account.

Fact: If your largest check is for your mortgage or car, the banks method may be best for both parties - you may rather the bank pay that check first rather than letting it bounce.

Uncomfortable Fact: Nobody has to bounce a check. It happens if we are either spending above our means or too lazy to ensure we have enough money in the right account.

Investing isn’t just peaches and cream

The beauty of human beings is that we have, as a species, short memories. We also forget that experiences that are “old hat” to us, aren’t for a generation just a few short years behind us.

Here’s a truth that can’t be said enough:

If you can’t sleep at night wondering how much more stocks will fall, then the stock market was never right for you in the first place.

My net worth has fallen, thanks to the stock market, over 6% since the beginning of the year. Should I panic? Absolutely not - I’m still better off than where I was January 2007. I’m considerably better off than a few short years ago, and I’m ridiculously better off than I was before the latest bull market run-up in stocks. I have the risk tolerance for the bad times, so I can make more in the long-run.

Formula Check

(S&P 500 down 10% since 12/31/07) * (20 years to retirement) = still nothing to worry about

Whew - the math still works :)
